It does not have a battery and is activated by a scanner that is passed over the area of the chip.\u00a0 The radiowaves put out by the scanner activate the chip, and the scanner reads the identification number assigned to the chip.\u00a0 The unique, one-of-a-kind ID number shows on the scanner screen.<\/p>\n<p>The microchip is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">NOT a GPS device<\/span> and it does not track your pet.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Facts<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The microchip is permanent and will last the life of your pet.\u00a0 It cannot get lost.<\/p>\n<p>The implantation process is quick and relatively painless.\u00a0 It is very similar to a routine vaccination and is done with a hypodermic needle with a slightly larger needle.\u00a0 The average cost is usually $45-50 and any veterinarian should be able to do the procedure.<\/p>\n<p>Each microchip number is unique to your pet.<\/p>\n<p>The databases for <em>microchipping<\/em> are national, so reunion is possible for your microchipped pet even it he has crossed state lines.<\/p>\n<p>Both dogs and cats should be microchipped.<\/p>\n<p>You should not be concerned about your privacy when registering the microchip information into the database.\u00a0 The only information about you is what you choose to provide, and there are protections in place for your privacy and security.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"width: 120px; height: 240px;\" src=\"\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;OneJS=1&amp;Operation=GetAdHtml&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;source=ac&amp;ref=tf_til&amp;ad_type=product_link&amp;tracking_id=cdw07-20&amp;marketplace=amazon&amp;region=US&amp;placement=B01HE6SDD8&amp;asins=B01HE6SDD8&amp;linkId=79e305affd1e56230ffb619406389798&amp;show_border=true&amp;link_opens_in_new_window=true&amp;price_color=333333&amp;title_color=0066c0&amp;bg_color=ffffff\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><br \/>\n<\/iframe><br \/>\nA microchip does NOT take the place of a collar with rabies and identification tags.\u00a0 If a pet is wearing a collar with id and rabies tags, that is usually the quickest way to locate the owner and have the pet returned.\u00a0 However, if the pet is not wearing the collar or if it is lost or removed, the microchip may be the only way the pet\u2019s owner can be found.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"830\" height=\"467\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-j-KAxujbPM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">When You Have Adopted a Pet<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you have adopted a pet from a shelter, ask them if they have <em>scanned<\/em> the pet for a microchip.\u00a0 Many shelters do the implantation into every animal they adopt out, so ask them if they have already implanted a microchip. \u00a0Be sure to get the identification number so that you can register it in the recovery database in your name.<\/p>\n<p>You can also have your veterinarian scan your pet for a microchip on his check-up. \u00a0If he cannot locate a chip, he will be able to implant one into your pet during a regular visit or check-up<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">If You Got Your Pet from a Breeder<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many breeders microchip their pups before sending them to new homes.\u00a0 In this case, check with them and if they have microchipped the pup, you will have to register the information when you bring your pup home.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Registering Your Pet\u2019s Microchip<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you have your pet microchipped by your veterinarian, ask the staff for information on what database and process they recommend.\u00a0 Sometimes the cost of their procedure includes the cost of database registration.\u00a0 If you are registering for a pet that has already been microchipped before he came home to your family, you can register him online on several databases for a small fee.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/homeagain.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Homeagain.com<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/avidid.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Avidid.com<\/a> are two major national pet recovery database companies that are very effective.\u00a0 Again, ask your veterinarian&#8217;s office what they suggest. \u00a0For a more effective record, upload a current photo of your pet into the database registration form if they have that option.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">If Your Pet Is Lost<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Contact the recovery database registration company immediately if your pet is lost and provide the pet\u2019s ID number. \u00a0Most recovery database companies have a hot line that you can call with your information, but you can also log in online and provide the <em>missing pet<\/em> report.\u00a0 They will guide you through their process.\u00a0 It is a very good idea to upload a photo of your pet along with your other registration info so that they will have it ready for backup id purpose.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">**Important**<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 If your pet returns home on his own,\u00a0 don\u2019t forget to call or notify the recovery database company back to advise them.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Maintenance<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In order to maintain your pet\u2019s microchip, just remember three things:<\/p>\n<p>1. Ensure that the microchip is registered<\/p>\n<p>2. Have your veterinarian <em>scan<\/em> your pet\u2019s chip at least once a year to make sure that it\u2019s still functioning<\/p>\n<p>3.
